Appendix E: Safety and Inclusivity
Fate's Edge GM Guide — Appendix E
X-Card System
- X-Card: "I'm not comfortable — change direction immediately." No explanation required.
- O-Card: "I'm excited — lean into this element."
- N-Card: "I need a break — pause the scene."
Keep cards visible. Model appropriate use as the GM.
Script Change
Ask at appropriate moments:
- Pause: "Are you okay with this content?"
- Rewind: "Would you like to go back and change something?"
- Fast Forward: "Would you like to skip ahead?"
Inclusive Worldbuilding
- Research real cultures thoroughly when drawing inspiration.
- Avoid stereotypes; build characters with depth and agency.
- Provide character options that do not rely on real-world cultural markers.
- Use high-contrast, readable materials for accessibility.
Conflict Resolution
When conflicts arise at the table:
- Pause gameplay.
- Discuss privately if needed.
- Focus on understanding, not assigning fault.
- Find collaborative solutions.
- Document any agreements.
Common solutions: the GM's ruling stands for the session; research the rule later; adjust future play.
